Biographical Sketch

Martha T. Thorn received her B.S. in health and physical education with a minor in English and general science from James Madison University (Madison College) in 1959. She taught in Delaware for one year before coming to Morgantown in 1960, when she married Gordon R. Thorn. At that time she entered into the master’s program at WVU where she earned her M.S. in physical education in 1963. She taught in the School of Physical Education for a number of years and in 1973 became the first coach of a woman’s intercollegiate athletic team at West Virginia University where she coached tennis for twenty-seven years.

In all, she worked for the School of Physical Education and the Department of Athletics for thirty years, retiring in 2000. At the present time she is the assistant score keeper for WVU Volleyball. Martha and Gordon have been married for fifty years and are the parents of three children and the grandparents of four grandchildren.
