Admission Requirements
The College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences uses the admission requirements of WVU.
Credit Load Per Semester
The minimum work per semester is 12 hours and the maximum work per semester is 20 hours. However, an adviser may register a student as a part-time student if fewer than 12 hours are required to meet all requirements for the bachelor’s degree. Other exceptions to these regulations may be requested by petitioning the Committee on Academic Standards.
Requirements for Degrees
- All students must complete University GEC required courses.
- Teacher Certification Curriculum: Students in teacher certification programs must complete a group of educationally related courses and other prescribed work.
- Students must complete the major requirements as determined by the appropriate department.
- Students must complete a minimum of 128 hours.
- A minimum grade-point average of 2.0 is required for graduation.
- Those in teacher certification must have a minimum grade-point average of 2.5.

For a regularly enrolled student of at least sophomore standing who has been accepted into a program of study in the WVU College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences, a graduate of a West Virginia high school whose grade point average at WVU is 3.2 or higher and has demonstrated interests and participation in community services and campus organizations.
Dana D. Brooks Doctoral Student Book Scholarship
For a doctoral graduate assistant in the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences’ Sport and Exercise Psychology discipline who shows financial need and is involved in professional and/or community organizations.
Doris Dorinzi Memorial Scholarship
For a Physical Education Teacher Education major of junior or senior standing who has a) graduated from a West Virginia high school, (b) demonstrated need for financial assistance, and ( c) demonstrated academic promise as determined by appropriate officials of the West Virginia Office of Student Financial Aid and the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences.
Dr. Patricia K. Fehl Graduate Student Scholarship
For a graduate student demonstrating financial need, admitted and regularly enrolled in one of the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences’ Graduate Programs (Athletic Coaching Education, Athletic Training, Physical Education Teacher Education, Sport Management, or Sport and Exercise Psychology). Priority is given to a first year doctoral student enrolled in Physical Education Teacher Education and who teaches in the College’s Basic Instruction Program. Preference given to Masters students in Physical Education Teacher Education and Athletic Coaching Education.
Eleanor Lantz Scholarship
For a College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences major demonstrating a very strong academic background and financial need.
Ferris and Deanna Antoon Textbook Scholarship
For undergraduate student in the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences who demonstrates academic promise and financial need; funds must be used by the recipient to purchase textbooks for their classes during the academic year the award is designated for.
Fred M. Coombs Scholarship
For an academically qualified undergraduate student with a 2.8 or higher overall grade point average who shows financial need and is majoring in (a) Athletic Coaching Education, (b) Athletic Training, (c) Physical Education Teacher Education, (d) Sport and Exercise Psychology, or (e) Sport Management.
John Semon Memorial Scholarship
For an academically qualified West Virginia resident undergraduate student with an overall GPA of 2.8 or higher, majoring in Physical Education Teacher Education and planning to teach in West Virginia.
Marvin (Bucky) Bolyard Scholarship
For a Preston County, West Virginia, resident enrolled as an undergraduate pre-major or major in the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences.
Roger Alford Memorial Scholarship
For an African-American undergraduate student demonstrating financial need and majoring in (a) Athletic Coaching Education, (b) Athletic Training, (c) Physical Education Teacher Education, (d) Sport and Exercise Psychology, or (e) Sport Management.
Sport Management Scholarship
For a full-time sport management major with at least a 3.0 overall GPA.

There are a substantial number of graduate assistantships available for part-time work in the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences. Duties may include teaching activity classes, research, administration, or sports medicine. These awards are made on a competitive basis and carry a stipend and in some cases a tuition waiver.
Swiger Doctoral Fellowship
Application materials for the Arlen G. and Louise Stone Swiger Doctoral Fellowship Program are now available on the WVU Graduate Education website at http://grad.wvu.edu/financial_assistance/fellowships.
Students must be nominated by faculty of doctoral programs and recommended by the Deans of each college. Please note that the application deadline to the Office of Graduate Education and Life is February 15.
