West Virginia Physical Activity Plan creates shared vision

WVU partners are seeking statewide input to promote healthy living and quality of life for every West Virginian. A draft of the West Virginia Physical Activity Plan is now available for public comment by going to www.wvphysicalactivity.org.

According to organizers, if you live, work, play or just love West Virginia, you can contribute to a more physically active state by providing your feedback on the plan. The document is available for public comment until Nov. 22.

The West Virginia Physical Activity Plan is being developed to improve the health and quality of life of the states population. The plan focuses on involvement from eight societal sectors, including: Health Care: Public Health; Education; Business & Industry; Mass Media; Parks/ Recreation /Fitness/Sports; Transportation/Land Use/Community Planning; and Volunteer & Non-Profit. Each sectors contribution is considered a vital part of creating a shared vision. Read More

Mazzulla video will detail his treatments for medical confab

Former WVU men’s basketball standout Joe Mazzulla has filmed a video for the largest medical conference in West Virginia, Nov. 11-13, in Huntington. His treating athletic trainer during his career at WVU, Vincent G. Stilger, HSD, ATC, and CPASS faculty member, will be on hand to present a case review of Mazzullas injuries following the video presentation, which will detail the medical setbacks Mazzulla faced during his playing career and the techniques he used to overcome them. Heritage Project collects student, alumni memories

How will you remember your college days? The WVU Emeritus Graduates and the Alumni Center have joined together to create a continuing documentation of the history of WVU. The project will create a lasting, living continuing history of the University and involve gathering stories and videos from pivotal moments at the University to document the history of WVU over time. Expert to offer insight on physical activity for diverse populations as part of WVU lecture series

An expert in sports and active recreation for children will visit the WVU campus on Monday, Nov. 7 to discuss It Takes a Village to Raise a Physically Active Child. Dr. Thom McKenzie will cover school-based interventions and community-based obesity prevention programs during the presentation, scheduled from 1-2 p.m. in Room 172 at the Coliseum and hosted by the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences Distinguished Lecture Series. McKenzie studies physical activity programs which target Latino homes, communities, and schools; and community recreation centers in San Diego. He research includes existing efforts to examine physical activity in community parks in 12 U.S. cities. Read More..

WVU to host ‘Race and Sports in America’

The Center for Black Culture & Research, the Student Chapter of the Association of Black Journalists, and the WVU College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences will jointly sponsor a program entitled “Race and Sports in America” on Thursday, November 3, at 7 p.m. in room G-15 in the WVU Life Sciences Building. Keith Reed, Senior Editor for ESPN The Magazine, Oliver Luck, WVU Athletic Director, Dr. Dana Brooks, CPASS dean, will discuss the role of race in sports, especially the treatment of minorities by sports media. CPASS to celebrate 2011 Hall of Fame induction ceremony

WVU’s College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences will induct four graduates into its Hall of Fame and name men’s basketball coach Bob Huggins its 2011 Outstanding Alumnus on Oct. 7, at the Waterfront Hotel. A reception is scheduled from 6-7 p.m.; the formal induction ceremony will begin at 7 p.m. The public is welcome to attend; reservations are required: 304-293-0827. Full story

New ESPN show to include WVU grad

NFL 32, a new show on ESPN2, will include commentary and analysis by West Virginia University alumnus Kevin Elko. The show, hosted by Chris Mortenson and Suzy Kolber, airs weekdays from 6-7 p.m. Elko will appear on the show each Friday for about 5-10 minutes, sharing his expertise on various issues that are going on that week with league personnel and teams. Elko, who earned multiple degrees from WVU and is a member of two of the schools Halls of Fame, was a guest on Chris Mortensons ESPN radio show last year where he did a segment called The NFL Psychological Report. When Mortenson landed the host role in the new show, he suggested that ESPN invite Elko to participate. More online

W&J honors black football star

Dana Brooks, dean and professor at CPASS, presented W&J officials with a poster collage of Dr. West’s accomplishments to display in the U. Grant Miller Library on campus. Dr. Brooks co-wrote the book “Racism in College Athletics: The African-American Experience” and is writing a paper on Dr. West. He co-wrote the book with Ronald Althouse, a WVU sociology professor, in 2000. “He was a pioneer,” Dr. Brooks said. “Back then, in the 1920s, there were very few African-American players in private colleges, but there were some in the Midwest and East.” Paul Robeson, the concert singer, was one. He was playing football at Rutgers in New Jersey in the early 1920s. Full story

Fall fitness classes offer land-based and water activities
A new exercise class will help participants burn calories, build sleek muscles and provide a total body workout in less than one hour. “Get Pumped” has been added to a full range of classes that are available this fall through the WVU Lifetime Activities Program. Classes and fitness center memberships are available for WVU faculty, staff, students and the community through December. Watson elected to head Association for Applied Sport Psychology group
Jack Watson, professor and department chair of sport sciences in West Virginia University’s College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences, has been elected to serve as president-elect of the Association for Applied Sport Psychology. Watson will act as the 28th president in the group’s history. Full story
Morgantown Adventure Sports Series returns in September
A Morgantown-based outdoor athletic series, hosted by the West Virginia University’s College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences, returns in September. The Morgantown Adventure Sports Series is a unique athletic competition that challenges cyclists, runners and triathletes while featuring scenic hillside courses, lake swimming and rugged mountain biking. Facilities Update

Work on WVU’s athletic fields is wrapping up just in time for the start of the new academic year. Student Recreation Center Director Dave Taylor said the synthetic field was recently laid at the old St. Francis school site. This week, crews should lay the sod for the natural grass field. They also are finishing work on the tennis courts and walking track. The fields are next to the College’s new building site. Jerry West to attend W.Va. book festival
WVU basketball legend and CPASS grad Jerry West will be in Charleston to talk about his autobiography at the 11th annual West Virginia Book Festival this fall, just days after the book is published. West is scheduled to speak at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22, at the Charleston Civic Center. The autobiography, “West by West: My Charmed, Tormented Life,” co-authored by Jonathan Coleman, will be published by Little, Brown and Company on Oct. 19. Full story

CPASS develops strong bonds in Brazil
CPASS is one of seven colleges throughout WVU involved in a study abroad exchange in Brazil. The University is strategically aligning with a county that is well on its way to becoming a major economic force. CPASS students traveled to Brazil this May to examine the impact of the country’s culture, history, and politics of sports. Jerry West, CPASS grad and Hall of Fame member, NBA and WVU basketball legend, says golf is the toughest game he has ever tried to play. “It’s you against a golf course. WVU students earn Tae Kwon Do Medals
In sports, a friendly rivalry can often be the best source of motivation for an athlete to seek improvement. The combination of competition and cooperation drives athletes to constantly achieve higher levels of ability. Chase Vasale and Evan Vance, both students at WVU and members of the West Virginia Taekwondo team that recently competed at the AAU National Taekwondo championships, are proof of that very dynamic. WVU and CPASS develop Brazil Bond
WVU is strategically aligning with a country that is well on its way to becoming a major economic force. Seven colleges throughout WVU, including CPASS, are branching out with Brazilian programs for student and faculty exchanges and academic programs. Other WVU colleges include Creative Arts, Law, Mineral and Energy Resources, Business and Economics and Arts and Sciences. Forty-four students from WVU had the opportunity to travel to Brazil this summer to study music, sport sciences, law and social marketing. Full story

Discounts for Greenbrier Classic alumni badges benefit Jerry Wilkins Scholarship Fund
A donation of Greenbrier Classic golf tournament badges will have a lasting impact on West Virginia University sport management students. Sport management graduate students will offer the badges at a 50 percent discount for this summers event to be held July 25-31 at the Greenbrier Resorts famed Old White Course. Proceeds from the sale of the discounted badges will support the Jerry P. Wilkins Scholarship Fund and the graduate sport management major. The scholarship was established to continue Wilkins legacy of compassion, leadership, and wisdom. Full story

WVU College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences, along with West Virginia on the Move and the CARDIAC Project, are coordinating the WV Physical Activity Plan to provide direction to promote healthy physical activity levels for citizens of West Virginia. The PA Plan requires ongoing input from people of all walks of life, and from every corner of the state. Key partners will help develop, implement, and evaluate an effective Plan that will encourage collaboration, and guide policy and practice.

WVU’s CPASS faculty help organize sports conference in China
Seven faculty members from WVU’s College of Physical Activity and Sports Sciences recently attended an international conference in China which the college helped organize and co-sponsor. CPASS Dean Dana Brooks presented one of the keynote addresses and several other faculty members had leading roles at the conference studying the current educational practice and future of global physical education and sport. Besides CPASS, conference co-sponsors were the International Society for Comparative Physical Education and Sport and East China Normal University. WVU’s Dr. Lynn Housner, CPASS associate dean, and Dr. Xiaozan Wang, associate dean, ECNU, served as key organizers in planning the conference. The conference was an outstanding success due in large measures to the leadership efforts of Drs. Housner and Wang, Brooks said. Full story

Wilson, Becht bring kids grid camps to area

West Virginia gave a lot to former WVU standouts Quincy Wilson and Anthony Becht. Now, they say, they’re looking to give a little back. Wilson, CPASS ACE grad (2003), will host a youth football camp for Morgantown area kids. He also plans to host a charity basketball game to aid the Chris Henry family. Full story

Former Mountaineer and CPASS grad Lester Rowe returns to WVU

Former WVU men’s basketball player Lester Rowe is back with the Mountaineers. Rowe, 1985 CPASS grad, is the newest addition to the WVU women’s basketball coaching staff. Rowe played at WVU from 1982-85. His teams combined for a 90-23 record, which included three conference championships. Known to Mountaineer fans as ‘Lester Rowe from Buffalo,’ he played professional basketball overseas for eight years in Argentina, the Philippines, Venezuela, France, Germany and the United States. When his professional basketball career ended, Rowe got into coaching. Full story

Former WVU All-American and NFL veteran Brian Jozwiak hosts 21st annual celebrity golf tournament benefitting WVU Children’s Hospital

Jozwiak, 1990 BSPE grad, spoke to the crowd at the June 24 tournament. The emotion of the event was easy to feel. Jozwiak explained that although the WVU football team adopted Children’s Hospital, it’s the children who have taught the players life lessons. To learn more, visit

Former Mountaineer and ACE grad Owen Schmitt goes to camp

Owen Schmitt returns frequently to West Virginia whether due to his love of music or love for the Mountain State. Schmitt, 2007 Athletic Coaching Education alum, is currently back in West Virginia, hosting his second camp in as many years at Laidley Field in Charleston. Full story

WVU announces McNair Scholarships

Ciera Nicholson, a sport and exercise psychology major from Martinsburg, is one of fourteen WVU students selected as the latest Ronald E. McNair scholars. The group will join alumni of the program in the first annual reunion to hear the man who created the program. Carl S. McNair wanted a way to honor his brother, Ron, who was killed in the 1986 Challenger space shuttle tragedy, so he created a foundation to encourage African-Americans and other under-represented student populations to pursue careers in science, mathematics and technology. Carl McNair will be the keynote speaker at the first reunion of WVU’s Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program. The event is at 6 p.m. Friday at the Clarion Hotel Morgan. Full story

National Youth Sports Program at WVU offers summer fun for kids free

A local summer program offered free to economically disadvantaged youth ages 10-16 combines physical activity and education while teaching responsible behavior. Hosted by WVUs College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences, the National Youth Sports Program helps kids improve physical fitness through sports at various sites on the WVU campus. ICPE publishes new blog

The Sports IQ (http://thesportsiq.com) is a new blog by the editorial staff at Fitness Information Technology (FiT), a division of the International Center for Performance Excellence in CPASS. The blog examines the underbelly of sport: culture, history, psychology, management, marketing, finance, coaching, and a host of subtopics that are interesting, relevant, and thought-provoking. It also provides a glimpse of some of the work of FiT’s authors, several of whom are CPASS faculty.

WVU Ware Jamison Gateway Dedicated

Despite the rain, the Ware Jamison Gateway entrance park at the corner of Beechurst and University Avenues was dedicated Tuesday, April 19, the day Al and Delores met on the WVU campus in 1948. Mrs. Ware called the land donation “a gift of love for my university and my hometown.” Full story

Jeffrey Core has the tall task of opening for Bob Huggins at this semester’s graduation ceremony. Core, who won the West Virginia University College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences National Association for Sports and Physical Education Outstanding Major of the Year award in 2011, will speak to fellow graduates next month. Study abroad trip includes clothing drive

As part of a study abroad trip, students from WVU’s College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences are collecting clothing for children in Brazil and will deliver the clothing during their May trip. Clothing for children ages 4-12 is most needed, but all sizes will be accepted. The goal is to bring at least two large bags of clothes. Items may be dropped off in a box located outside of Dr. Flett’s office (room 274, Coliseum). The deadline for the clothing drive is May 12. Information: Ryan.Flett@mail.wvu.edu or 304-293-0844. Voice of the Mountaineers to be honored at Erickson Alumni Center

For many alumni and fans of West Virginia University, decades were spent listening to basketball and football games broadcast by the “Voice of the Mountaineers” Jack Fleming. On April 29, his legacy will be celebrated with the unveiling of “Fleming Corner” at The Erickson Alumni Center. This special area includes memorabilia, walls decorated with some of Jack’s best play-by-plays, and a special bronze statue created by WVU alumnus Jamie Lester. Full story

Garrett Ford to receive NAACP Lifetime Achievement Award

Garrett Ford (B.S., ‘69, M.S. ‘70), WVU associate athletic director for student services, will receive the NAACP Lifetime Achievement Award at the Collegiate Chapter of the NAACP’s first annual NAACP Image Awards Ceremony. The event, which was organized to honor the outstanding work and contributions of WVU students, faculty, and administration; will be held on Tuesday April 19, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. in the Mountainlair Ballrooms. Immediately following the awards ceremony will be the Center for Black Culture & Research Spring Gala, also held in the Ballrooms. Both events are free and open to the public. Formal attire is required.

WVU to dedicate Ware Jamison Gateway

WVU is recognizing the generous donation of a Morgantown couple and CPASS Hall of Fame members by hosting a dedication of its first formal gateway to the campus. In 2006, Dolores “Dee” Jamison Ware and Alfred “Al” F. Ware, both WVU alumni, donated land for the University’s entrance park to the WVU Foundation. The plaza is located at the intersection of University and Beechurst avenues. The Wares also have established an enhancement fund through the Foundation for the Gateway plaza. Funds from the endowment will be used to add landscaping, plantings and other improvements to the site. A dedication will take place on Tuesday (April 19) at 11 a.m. at the Ware Jamison Gateway. Former athlete and Wall Street floor trader turned performance coach to offer April 15 presentation

An advisor to Wall Street’s elite deal-makers and traders will visit West Virginia University as part of WVU’s College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences 2011 spring lecture series. Dr. Doug Hirschhorn will present “Dare to be Great” to students at 11 a.m. April 15 to in room 172 at the WVU Coliseum. The talk is also open to students, faculty, staff and the general public. WVU researchers design new, online resource to help West Virginians improve their health

A new website that features fitness and nutritional information, a weight loss blog and an interactive portal to submit questions to exercise and dietary experts is available to participants and providers of the Public Employees Insurance Agency Weight Management Program. The website, http://healthperformance.wordpress.com, is part of an ongoing partnership between WVU and the PEIA. The goal is to expand the program’s reach and provide training resources for health professionals affiliated with the program. Visitors to the site will find useful information about behavior change, motivation, creating weekly meal plans, setting and monitoring goals, making good food choices and strategies for successful weight loss. Athletes and coaches alike had the opportunity to learn what could make successful teams from West Virginia University’s College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences 2011 distinguished lecture series. April Heinrichs, currently the technical director of the Women’s Youth National Teams Program for the U.S. Soccer Federation, has had 30 years of coaching women’s soccer for the Olympics, college soccer and FIFA.
