Biographical Sketch

Dana D. Brooks is Professor and Dean of the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences at West Virginia University. He received his A.A. Degree (1971) from Hagerstown Junior College, B.S. from Towson State University (1973) and M.S. (1976) and Ed.D. (1979) from West Virginia University. He has published and presented nationally and internationally in the areas of sport sociology and sport social psychology. Dr. Brooks is the co-author of Racism in College Athletics: The African American Experience (2nd Edition) and Diversity and Social Justice in College Sports. He served as chairperson of the following West Virginia University Committees/Councils: West Virginia University’s Athletic Council, Black Community Concerns, Social Justice Council, and Affirmative Action. In addition, he served as Minority Recruitment Coordinator, Office of the Provost. He served on WVU’s NCAA Self-study Steering Committee. He is project administrator for the National Youth Sport Program at West Virginia University. Dr. Brooks is a member of the North American Society for Sport Sociology and the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. He received the Dean’s Recognition Award from the College of Health Professions, Towson University Alumni Association in 1999; received the Martin Luther King, Jr., Achievement Award from the WVU Center for Black Culture and Research; the WVU Social Justice Award; and received the Martin Luther King “Living the Dream” Award from the Martin Luther King, Jr., Holiday Commission, State of West Virginia. Dr. Brooks was also inducted as a Fellow in the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education in September 1999. He was President of The American Alliance For Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. (2009-2010)
