Experience a vibrant and rich culture while learning about the business aspects of baseball in the Dominican Republic
Explore sport and cultural venues
During the trip, students will visit the sport and cultural organizations located in the cities of Boca Chica, Santo Domingo, and San Pedro de Macoris.
Visits in Santo Domingo will include a visit to the US Embassy, Dominican Offices
for Major League Baseball, Quisqueya Stadium and a tour of Ciudad Colonial, the
historic central neighborhood of Santo Domingo.
In Boca Chica, students will have the opportunity to visit two MLB academies (e.g., the Kansas Royals, Arizona Diamondbacks, Washington Nationals, or the Cincinnati Reds). Students will also attend a baseball game part of the Dominican league.
San Pedro de Macoris
In San Pedro de Macoris visits may include the Toronto Blue Jays Academy, Atlanta
Braves Academy, and a visit to Estadio Tetelo Vargas of the Dominican Winter League
(DWL), home of the Estrellas Orientales.

Participate in service projects
While at Boca Chica, Students will be involved in one or more service projects, such as player education with KC Royals or the Boston Red Sox, and a project with a local youth baseball team at a sugar cane village.
Earn credit hours
This course will be split into two parts: a 2-credit on-campus/on-line section given during the last 8-weeks of the spring semester of 2017, and 1-credit lab which will be offered from May 16 to 26, 2017 during the actual trip to the DR. The 2-credit course is designed to provide students with the background of how baseball is organized and managed in the DR, including:
- The cultural significance of baseball within the Dominican society
- The role different stakeholders play in the development of the baseball industry in the DR
- and the business aspects of baseball in the DR and their link with MLB. In addition, students will receive information regarding the travel experience
The 1-credit lab portion of this course is designed to support and enhance the knowledge gained during the 2-credit course. Baseball in the Dominican Republic will provide students a cross-cultural perspective of sport in the DR and the United States with an emphasis on the organizational, managerial, business and cultural aspects of baseball.
