Kittie Blakemore received her bachelor’s degree in education with an emphasis in physical education, history and English from James Madison University. She taught physical education in public schools before completing her master’s degree in physical education from WVU in 1961. From there, she taught in the WVU School of Physical Education where she was named Outstanding Teach five times. Kittie is best known for being the first women’s basketball coach in WVU history. She started the program in 1973 and compiled a career record of 301-214 over 19 seasons, including the 1989 Atlantic 10 tournament championship, the 1992 regular season A-10 titles and NCAA berths in 1989 and 1992. Following her retirement from coaching, Kittie served as WVU’s assistant athletic director for sports development and senior women’s administrator until her retirement in 1997. She currently resides in her hometown of Manassas, VA.
