    This basketball is autographed by several pioneering African American student-athletes, including Jimmy Lewis, Edward Harvard, Carey Bailey, Cathy Parson and Garrett Ford. Jimmy Lewis played basketball for WVU from 1967 to 1968; Edward Harvard played for the Mountaineers from 1966 to 1968 and Carey Bailey was an active player in 1968 and 1969. Cathy Parson, who played from 1980 to 1983, was the first woman to score 2000 points and the first woman to have her jersey retired. Lastly, Garrett Ford played football for the Mountaineers from 1965 to 1967. Ford retired as the WVU Associate Athletic Director for Student Services.

    Mountaineer running back, Garrett Ford, 1965 to 1967, was one of the first African Americans to play football for West Virginia University. Ford was drafted by the Broncos but returned to WVU as the very first African American assistant coach. In 1995 Garrett Ford was inducted into the WVU Hall of Fame.
